Why Columbia essays are different

Columbia Business School's August 2027 application has two 50-character short answers and three essays: Essay 1 on your career goals over the next three to five years and your long-term dream job (500 words), Essay 2 on a specific example of making a team more collaborative, more inclusive or more of a community (250 words), and Essay 3 on how you would co-create your optimal MBA experience at CBS (250 words). The short answers ask for your immediate post-MBA professional goal and how you plan to spend the summer after your first year. An optional essay of up to 500 words adds context, and CBS says it “does not need to be a formal essay.” Essay 3 opens with the clearest statement of what CBS values: a collaborative learning environment where students feel “a sense of belonging, agency, and partnership.” Round 1 closed September 9, 2026. A strong CBS set is consistent from the first short answer to Essay 3. The 50-character goal and the summer plan point the same way as Essay 1's three-to-five-year path and dream job. Essay 2 tells one specific story in which the applicant's actions changed how a team worked together. Essay 3 is specific about the CBS experience the applicant would co-create, and why it fits their goals.

  Fifty characters is a phrase, not a sentence. Name the goal and stop.

  The prompt opens by saying CBS already has “a clear sense of your professional path to date.” Spend the words on goals.

  A team that was already inclusive is not an example of how you made it more so.
