Why Johnson essays are different

Cornell Johnson receives roughly 1,800 applications for ~270 seats in the two-year MBA and reads three essays as one application: a 350-word Goals Statement, a 350-word Impact Essay, and the one-page Back of Resume. The Back of Resume is Johnson's signature surface — there is no equivalent at any other M7 program — and readers explicitly cite it in committee notes as a deciding factor for borderline files. The page is designed to add a real off-CV dimension to the applicant: hobbies with depth, side projects, family commitments, unconventional credentials. The most common rejection pattern is a Back of Resume that paraphrases the front — additional 'leadership' bullets that say nothing new. Johnson's immersion-led curriculum (Investment Banking, Strategic Marketing, Digital Tech, etc.) is also a real screening criterion: applicants who don't name an immersion or treat Ithaca as a downside get filtered out, even with strong numbers.

A strong Johnson application has a Goals Statement that names the role, the function, the immersion, and the post-MBA employer cluster in the first three sentences. The Back of Resume reveals four things the front doesn't — a multi-year personal project, an unconventional credential, a community commitment with depth, an unusual hobby pursued seriously. By the end of the set, the reader can describe the applicant as a person, not just as a candidate.
