Why Generic essays are different

Every MBA program reads essays differently. Our critique scores yours against this school's actual evaluation criteria — leadership impact, clarity, fit, authenticity, and prompt alignment — not generic essay rules. The result is a paragraph-by-paragraph rubric score and the three fixes that move your score the most.

What readers look for

The Generic reader's lens

  • 01

Who you are beyond your resume

Readers want a person on the page, not a CV in prose. The opener should make them want to keep reading.

  • 02

    Quantified professional impact

Specific numbers, named stakeholders, and the cost of the decision you made — not adjectives.

  • 03

    Authentic fit with the program

Reference specific clubs, courses, or experiential learning that match what you actually want to do.

  • 04

    Self-awareness from setbacks

What you learned, what changed in your behavior afterwards, and what evidence proves it.

How to write it

How to write the Generic essay

  1. 01

Read the prompt twice and write down the literal question it asks.

  2. 02

List 4–6 candidate stories from the last 3 years that could answer it.

  3. 03

Pick the one with the highest stakes and the clearest before/after.

  4. 04

Draft the opener as a scene, not a thesis statement.

What good looks like

The shape of a strong Generic essay

A strong opener drops the reader into a specific moment — a room, a deadline, a decision — and forces them to keep reading to find out what you did. By paragraph two, the stakes are clear and a named stakeholder is on the page. The middle is the smallest number of actions that change the outcome. The close earns its ambition because the rest of the essay paid for it.

Common pitfalls

What gets Generic essays rejected

  • Resume narration

Walking through your CV in paragraph form. Readers already have the resume.

  • Generic ambition

Claiming impact without numbers, names, or stakes.

  • Unsupported leadership claims

Calling yourself a leader without showing what changed because you were there.
